The Flood Warning Sirens Sound For Real

By George | January 22, 2008

Flood Warning System Activated

During the recent spate of rain across the British Isles, we received news that the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Flood Warning System has been activated, to warn residents and visitors about dangerously high river levels in the region and the attendant risk of flooding.

The Flood Waters Rise

Some local residents were reported as being unhappy about some aspects of the support offered by the authorities, such as a shortage of sandbags. It seems nevertheless that the warning sirens were successful in alerting the public and giving them time to prepare themselves, their homes and property against the flood threat.

Preparing For The Worst

It is good to report that in the event, the flood waters subsided before any significant damage was inflicted on homes and properties in the area.

Flooding - An ever-present and growing threat

By George | January 12, 2008

The Ever-Present Threat

Floods and the threat of flooding may not attract as much news coverage throughout the year as do events related to terrorism, but it’s a fact that we in the UK are far more likely to be affected by flood waters than we are by terrorist activity.

Flooding costs lives and disrupts whole communities. The after-effects of flood waters can affect towns and villages for years, while people whose homes are damaged or destroyed by floods may never be able to regain their peace of mind.

While visiting the National Flood Warning Centre shortly after its inception, I examined the Centre’s maps. I was amazed to see just how much of the UK’s housing stock is at threat from flooding. With the government’s increasing pressure on councils to provide new housing and considering the scarcity of land, there is a further risk that even more homes will be built within the UK’s flood plains.

You can check to see if your home is at risk from flooding. Refer to the Environment Agency’s Flood map. Just enter your post code into the Flood Map web page.

2008 Ushers in Fresh Fears of Flooding

By George | January 3, 2008

Happy new year to all our readers

I hope that 2008 will prove to be good year for all.

The early indications are that this is likely to be a wet year, as Jaunary has ushered in a period of sustained and heavy rainfall in many parts of the UK. This rain has led to waterlogged ground, which in turn leads to floods as more rain continues to fall.

With more rain forecast for the next week, many communities fear that there will be more flooding.

We hope that local authorities will continue to bolster their regions’ coastal and inland flood defences and to provide residents and visitors with sufficient early warning to mitigate the effects of the flood waters.

Report demands Flash Flood Early Warning Systems

By George | January 2, 2008

UK's Inadequate Flash Flood Warning Reported

I welcome the news that an independent report into the June 2007 flooding has identified that the UK does not provide adequate early warning against flash floods.

Although a number of high-profile Coastal flood defences and early warning systems have been implemented, the problem of inland flooding as a result of excessive or localised rainfall remains largely unaddressed. This leaves large areas of the nation unprotected against the risk.

Anything that can be done to provide early warning and to allow people and businesses to take action to mitigate the risk and minimise their losses is worth doing. Such action will be a benefit to the community and reduce the cost of making good the flood-related damage.

This matter has also been aired in the Hull & East Riding press.
